Summer Reading Program

Dear Parent/Guardian,
The ability to read well is a powerful predictor of success in school. We want all students to develop a love of reading that will remain with them for life. We ask your support of our 2008 Summer Reading Program. Simply stated, the purpose of the program is to have students read throughout the summer.

Both branches of the Redondo Beach Public Library have extensive titles for young readers and are ready to help students select books. For students entering grades 3 through 8, you may want to review your child's California STAR Reading Level, which is reported on the parent report of the test results. Once you ascertain your child's reading level you can review appropriate titles from the California STAR Reading List at the California Reading List. This web page can help you locate a book that is appropriate. Read the information and then click on search to find a book, based on your score on the California English-Language Arts Standards Test. Students should choose books that are of interest to them and at an appropriate reading level (not too hard).

Middle School students are asked to read at least one book, and complete an Activity Log. Activity logs were sent home with students in June. Additional logs are available at the office and may become available at the district web site some time during the summer.

We wish you all a relaxing summer break and look forward to your return in September.

Sincerely,

Annette Alpern, Ed.D.
