Attendance
Please refer to the district handbook for specific policies.
Student success in school is directly tied to attendance. Responsibility for attending class lies with the parent and the student.
Perfect attendance = being at school every day with no tardies.
We will be celebrating perfect attendance this year with THEME PARTIES three times (Before Winter Break, Before Spring Break, and at the end of the school year).
Education Code Section 48320: California compulsory education law requires everyone between the ages of 6 and 18 years of age to attend school, except 16 and 17 year-olds who have graduated from high school or passed the California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE) and obtained parental permission to leave. Some students, however, violate compulsory education laws and have a pattern of unexcused absences. Although truancy and excessive absenteeism are not new problems, they cause costly, long-term problems for the students, school, and the community.
Absences
If a student is absent from class, he or she should do the following within two days of returning to school:
- Bring a note to the attendance office from a parent or guardian stating the date(s) of the absence and the reason(s) for the absence.
- Have his or her parent or guardian call the attendance office and give the date(s) of the absence and the reason(s) for the absence.
Valid Absences
A pupil shall be excused from school when the absence is:
- Due to his or her illness
- Due to quarantine under the direction of a county or city health officer
- For the purpose of having medical, dental, optometry, or chiropractic service
- For the purpose of attending the funeral services or a member of his or her immediate family, as long as the absence is not more than one day if the service is conducted in California and not more than three days if the service is conducted outside California
- Due to the illness or medical appointment during school hours of a child of whom the pupil is the custodial parent
- For justifiable personal reasons including, but not limited to, an appearance in court, attendance at a funeral service, observance of a holiday or ceremony of his or her religion, attendance at religious retreats, or attendance at an employment conference, when the pupil's absence has been requested in writing by the parent or guardian an approved by the principal or a designated representative pursuant to uniform standards established by the governing board
- Students may make up missed assignments and tests when an absence is valid
- VACATIONS: Vacations taken during the school year are NOT encouraged. However, when vacations are planned, the principal should receive a letter from the parents at least two weeks before the leaving date. This allows time to inform teachers and to organize their expectations of missed school work and to be placed on INDEPENDENT STUDY plan. Students who do not complete the independent study plan are at risk of being reported to SARB (School Attendance Review Board)
