Before and After School Care

Birney School does not provide before and after school care. The school provides supervision in the morning beginning at 7:30am. Before that, students are not to be on campus without a parent or guardian. When arriving to school before 8:15am (3rd - 5th grade) or 8:30am (1st - 2nd grade), students are to report to the cafeteria or yard. Students are not to be walking the halls or hanging out outside classroom unsupervised.

At the end of the day, students are expected to leave campus when the final bell rings. On Wednesdays, as a courtesy, Birney School provides supervision until 2:30pm. Students will NOT be allowed to play on the yard unsupervised and will be referred to the office after 2:30pm every day.

If you need child care, Birney School hosts two programs for a fee:

  • City of Redondo Beach, Department of Recreation: Information about the program can be found in the front office or by calling (310) 318-0610.
  • RBUSD Child Development Centers: Call (310) 798-8683 (ext. 202, 203) or click here for more information about enrollment.

Cellphones

The use of cell phones is strictly prohibited by students during school hour. Cell phones must be turned off and put away at all times. Students who are found using cell phones during the school day will surrender their phones to the front office for a parent to pick up at a later time. Telephone calls will be made by school personnel in case of an emergency.

Change of Address and Telephone Numbers

Please notify the school office immediately of any change in a pupil's address or telephone number. Emergency numbers should be continuously updated.

Drop Off and Pick Up

There is NO STOPPING in front of the school between 7:45am and 8:30am and between 2:15pm and 3:00pm. You may stop for a minute to drop off or pick up a student but you may not park and sit for more than a minute as it blocks the traffic and forces cars to double park. Then we have kids walking into the streets. In addition to not stopping in front of the school, please DO NOT drive in the parking lot. With everyone's cooperation, we can make this time safe for everyone.

Please do not drive down the entrance on Grant Avenue after 7:45am to park or drop off a student!

Dress Code

Please refer to the district handbook for specific policies. Briefly, students at Birney should:

  • Wear safe shoes (slippers, flip flops, open toed sandals are not considered safe)
  • Not wear dangling earrings or jewelry that causes a safety risk
  • Not wear anything with inappropriate writing or pictures
  • Not wear halter tops, strapless tops, bare midriff tops, short skirts, or sheer clothing

Lost and Found

Please label all of your child's clothing and possessions to expedite locating lost articles. The lost and found is located in the cafeteria.

Homework

Homework is a vital part of the total learning process. Grade-level practices are communicated to the students during the first week of school. The following list serves as a reminder about the importance of homework:

  • provides essential practice in needed skills
  • trains students in good work habits
  • affords opportunities for increasing self-direction
  • enriches and extends school experience
  • helps students learn to budget time
  • promotes growth in responsibility
  • brings students into contact with out-of-school learning resources

Scooters, Skateboards, and Wheelies

Scooters, Skateboards, and Wheelies are not allowed on campus. NO exceptions. Bikes are allowed but students must wear a helmet (It's the LAW.)

Visitors

All visitors are to report to the school office before going to any other part of the building. Strangers in the building will be asked if assistance is needed and then directed to the office. In no case should a parent take a child from the school without signing them out in the office.
