Assemblies Update from the PTA

In January, the entire school was taken back to the time of Don Quixote de la Mancha with a touch of current day flair. The children seemed to enjoy the light-hearted presentation of this classic tale presented by Will & Company. Through an adventurous adaptation, the legendary characters of Don Quixote and his squire Sancho Panza were brought to the stage and introduced to the students. Will & Company returned to campus to help the 6th graders explore theatre techniques and role-play scenes from the play.

In February, the 1st – 3rd graders enjoyed a “Young Author’s Day.” Young Authors Day is designed to support and enhance the creative writing curriculum. The day began with an assembly presented by a classically trained Mime artist introducing students to the "art of silence" - mime. During the program the performer discussed the differences between writing for the stage and writing for the page. He stressed the importance of structure and he told the students where he got his inspiration for his stories. Afterwards, the students returned to their classrooms to write stories for the performer. During the writing process the performer stopped in classrooms to answer questions and help with the writing. The day culminated with an afternoon assembly in which the students are recognized for their fine work as selected stories are acted out by the performer. Young Authors Day was a fascinating educational experience designed to stimulate the imagination in all of us!!

Then in March, the K – 3rd graders saw Michael "Badhair" Williams. He brought Pioneer Appalachian Folk Tales and Folkways to life. In continuing the tradition of the storyteller, Williams shared with the students the richness of his own culture, and a passion and deep appreciation for his heritage, compelling them to reflect on their stories, and their own roots.

Later in the month, the 4th – 6th graders will see “Don't Be Afraid! It's Just Opera!” starring famed mezzo-soprano Suzanna Guzman. Ms. Guzmán is a principal artist with the Los Angeles Opera.

If you get a chance, check out the bulletin board in Dolphin Square for upcoming assembly information.
