STAR Reading
What
Is STAR?
STAR (Students Thrilled About Reading) is a Madison School PTA-sponsored
program designed to encourage students to read.
How Does It Work?
The STAR program runs for 7 months, from October through April.
Each day, students record on a calendar sent home monthly the number
of minutes spent reading or being read to outside of class time.
Each month, those who read at least 450 minutes are given a small
prize. 450 minutes is about 15 minutes of reading every day of the
month.
Rules
- Completed calendars need to be returned to teachers on the
first school day of the following month.
- A parent must sign the calendar at month’s end to verify
the minutes recorded.
- A maximum of 1500 minutes per month can be added to the child’s
cumulative total.
Reach For The STARS!
Do you want to earn extra prizes for being a STAR reader? We keep
track of your reading minutes throughout the year. You can earn
additional prizes for reaching the following reading levels. These
are based on cumulative minutes read:
- Level I: Students who accumulate 3500 STAR
minutes get to choose a great book to take home and keep. That’s
an average of 17 minutes a day.
- Level II: At 5500 minutes, you’ll receive
a STAR Reading T-shirt designed by one of our students. That’s
an average of 26 minutes a day.
- Level III: At 7500 minutes you will receive
a gift certificate to the Spring Book Fair at Madison School.
That’s about 36 minutes a day.
Reading Celebration!
On Wednesday June 4th, 2008, look forward to our STAR Reading assembly
(subject to be announced). It promises to be a fun, literary performance
for the whole school.
