Create a 3D effect on a Ring.
- File/ New OR CTRL & Double-Click in Work Area
- 3 inches by 3 inches
- Resolution: 72 (92 on newer monitors), RGB Mode, Content white
- Increase the workspace by moving the mouse over the bottom right corner, so the mouse turns into a double sided arrow, and then move further right and down. This gives a margin to the area.
- Get color swatches and select a color.
- Press D on the keyboard and watch your color change to default
- Fill the area with the Foreground Color (Black) by holding ALT and tapping the BACKSPACE key.
- NOTE: If you get a Triangle next to your color on top of window (near the Cancel button), it means this is not a color for the Web. Click on the triangle to give you the closest Web Color.
- Create a NEW LAYER, by either clicking the NEW icon on the bottom right of the Layers Palette, or by going to Layer-New-NewLayer.
Select the Elliptical (circle) Marquee Tool.
- Change the Style to Constrained Aspect Ratio
- Make sure the Option for Feathering is set for 0 Pixels
- Draw a Circle that almost fills the entire work area.
- Pick a favorite color & Fill the area with that color
- Deselect (CTRL-D)
- Draw a Circle that is within the 1st circle, about half the size.
- Click the Delete key
- Deselect (CTRL-D)
- Select the Ring by using the Magic Wand Tool.
- Click on the Channels Palette
- Create a New Channel, by clicking the NEW icon
- Fill the area with WHITE.
- Add a filter effect, by going to FILTER-BLUR-GAUSSIAN BLUR
- Use a radius between 5-10.
- Click on Layers Palette & select Layer with the Ring
- Filter / Render Lighting Effects
- Texture Channel: Alpha 1
- Uncheck (Turn Off): White is high
- Intensity: 35, Focus: 69, Gloss: 0, 69, 0, 8 Mountainous: 5-20
- Turn around 180 degrees by grabbing the handles and moving
- Press OK
- Get rid of extra space around the ring
- Go to Select-Modify-Contract
- Contract by 3 pixels
- Invert the selection by clicking SHIFT - CTRL - I
- Click the DELETE key to get rid of the extra cells
- Save as Ring in your Photoshop folder

- First as a PSD (this will come in handy for the Olympic Ring assignment).
- Next save as a JPG or GIF, whichever of these two formats works best for you.
- Resave as a transparent ring
- Click off the EYE by the Background layer in the Layers Palette
- Go to Save For Web
- Save the file as Ring2
- You will need these files for the Olympic Ring assignment due later in the week.
- Show the RING in the Photoshop (PSD) format to me on the screen.
